Hamilton City Hall is located on 71 Main St. W. in Hamilton, Ontario. The City Hall is very well-maintained. It is situated in the centre of the city opposite McMaster University, the concert hall, art gallery and many other prominent institutions. Parking is available on the street as well as in the parking lot in the rear of the property for $3.25 an hour with a 15 day maximum. Free parking on Sundays and statutory holidays.

Got my marriage license here and the process was smooth with no hassle. Mariam assisted us and was very helpful. Overall, it was a good experience — City Hall is a convenient location to get your marriage license.

It was the worst experience I have ever had in all my years of life!
I have never met such ignorant people in what they do and where they work!
I went there for two days in a row and asked different people for the same information and was told different things by different employees. I wasted a lot of time and now I can't get married on the appointed date because of the ignorance of the City Hall employees!
Never ask anything of the people who sit there and serve you! They don't know anything! Go
straight away and talk to the employees who hold the highest positions and who can explain to you what you need to do in a given situation!

I have to say the service here impressed me and continues to. I travelled in from London to deal with a property in Puslinch. Everyone I spoke to on the phone was prompt and helpful. I got there and Crystal on the 5th floor was so lovely. She was attentive, helpful and fun all at the same time. The building itself was gorgeous and spotless right from the washrooms to the mosaics restored on each floor. Brody and Aminu from zoning and planning were helpful, listened and gave me answers quickly or followed up with things after I left very quickly. All in all I came in not really knowing where to start and everyone worked together to get me answers and help me feel much more confident. Great job everyone. It was such a pleasure to deal with a City Hall this well organized. It was inspiring. They have a super cool 3d model on the 5th floor and this gorgeous piece of art on the main floor too!

Very friendly staff. All the departments operate without connection and are very slow. I spent 30 mins today with 3 support staff to pay an invoice for a Fire Inspection for which it took 3 months for the city to send an invoice. The backlog and issues "with the system" are unbelievable.

Excellent service from City of Hamilton staff

I’ve been consistently impressed by the staff who answer the phones at City of Hamilton offices. Every time I’ve called—whether for building permits, general inquiries, or specific questions—I’ve found them to be unfailingly polite, helpful, and attentive.

They don’t just answer questions; they clarify, they follow up, and they make sure I get what I need—sometimes even emailing forms while I’m still on the phone to confirm I’ve received them. If they don’t know something, they quickly and efficiently connect me with someone who does.

It’s a level of service I rarely find these days, and it speaks, I think, to excellent training and a strong service culture. Full marks to the staff and whoever runs the training program. They’re doing something right.

Increasing property tax to the already over-taxed electorate is cruel and unnecessary. The process for the vacant unit tax declaration is predatory. No doubt the process is just going to snare unsuspecting homeowners into paying the tax. We should not be subjected to making such declarations. I believe the vacant unit tax violates Section 7 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedom on Life, Liberty, and Security of the Person.

I believe it is also a violation of Section 8 – Protection against Unreasonable Search or Seizure:

If enforcement involves inspections or mandatory reporting of how the property is used, someone could argue it’s an unreasonable invasion of privacy. For example, if a city demands detailed proof of occupancy, this could be challenged.

The City has no right to ask people how they use their personal property or demand people provide such proof.

I get the vacant unit tax is supposed to free up housing, but invading people's privacy is not how to do it.

I also highly doubt this a benevolent move to open-up housing. Its just another tax-grab.

Shame upon the bureaucracy of Hamilton, Ontario!!!
Once again, the people of Hamilton get abused!
