I will be forever grateful to Alex Hall of Canoe Arctic for opening my eyes to the incredible beauty of the Canadian High Arctic. There is not a single day that I don’t think about the time I spend with Alex on Barren Lands canoe expeditions. Alex’s knowledge, experience and enthusiasm made these expeditions unforgettable adventures. Thanks to him, I have been back to the Canadian Arctic every year.

Our experiences trekking with Alex Hall are beyond outstanding and leave us with an unbelievable hunger to return. My husband was so smitten that he has logged five trips. We strongly recommend a trip with this outstanding guide to the awe-inspiring arctic.

The opening of the season, when ice still remained on the lakes, and the river had just begun to melt began my first adventure. Words cannot describe the sights and sounds of the tinkling candle ice as the canoes broke through that first day. My second wilderness journey was the final trip of the season, as the arctic prepares for winter. Each day brought an ever changing kaleidoscope of vibrant fall colors. I am still in awe as I watch my photos circle on the screen saver. Magnificent sunsets were only surpassed by the 3-D multicolor encircling of the Northern Lights display – impossible to describe and so must be experienced.

Now rich in memories of musk oxen challenging, baby moose suckling, caribou ferrying, tundra and esker hiking, pristine waters and the taste of cloud berries come quickly to mind. Alex is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about all but especially the arctic wolves. His perfect howl brought one curious wolf right down to water’s edge. Visits to dens and witnessing the wolves hunting geese that were moulting were magical.

The years of experience Alex brings to his trips was evident in every aspect of our journeys. As you stare at the departing plane dipping a wing goodbye you marvel at being in the wilderness. What Alex provides is the reassurance that his exceptional organization and expertise will provide for the safety and welfare of the entire group. Canoeing guidance, food and equipment were excellent and Alex thankfully is methodical about all.

We paddled twice with Alex and loved almost every moment, even the black flies and cold winds and the fatigue. Alex is a truly great guide, from whom we learned much. We felt safe and secure in his judgement. Alex knows where the wolves raise their pups, where the musk oxen hang out, how to safely avoid grizzlies, and caribou habitiat and behaviors. Overland treks seek out the wolf dens and falcon nests, amidst huge eskers and immense wild flowers fields. He knows where to find the best camp sites when it is time to get off the water, and when it is best to hunker down and wait. We loved the intimate experience of the great open wilderness, the vastness and the light. The happiest moments of our lives!

I've paddled with Alex on the Barren Lands (they aren't!) probably 10 times since the mid-90s. I've accompanied him from the rivers flowing through the taiga - the Elk, the Taltson - and the tundra - the Thelon, the Back. You will find no better guide to part of the world, both as an outfitter and equiper, and, most important, as a naturalist intimately acquainted with the wildlife, plant life, and geography. The trips are demanding: paddling and portaging can be hard work. But they are rewarding, more so than I could have possible imagined before my first trip.
