We visited as the rhodos and magnolias were beginning to fade and the peonies had yet to burst open, and yet there was still much to see.
There were more varieties of rhododendruns here than I have seen elsewhere.
The paths here are wide, level and smooth, so accessible. Its a small and tranquil garden with some well-placed benches. We easily passed a pleasant hour here and will come again.

Great green space. Lots of variety. Was there mid-September. A few things were still in bloom. Great walk, whole walk took about 45 minutes at a slow pace. Parking in Lot 6 is recommended by the University but the lot fills up quickly.

Wheelchair and stroller accessible. Very friendly and narrow stroll.

We visited in late May, there are many large azalea bushes. I wonder if there are more variety of blooms(?)

Overall, we appreciate how well maintained the place is. The kids seemed to enjoy it - especially in the open area.

Paid parking on site.

The gardens are surprisingly large - and the best price of all - free!!
The large variety of rhododendrons and azaleas were very good. It's too bad that most of the grassy openings were closed for the public.

Beautiful gardens to stroll through. I imagine it's even better when everything's in full bloom. It was quiet, serene and you could even bring a small picnic if you wanted to. Enjoy!

A Botanical Haven on Vancouver Island! Finnerty Gardens, located at the University of Victoria, is a stunning showcase of over 1,500 species of plants and trees worldwide. You’ll find rhododendrons in abundance, providing vibrant blooms in the spring. The gardens also feature an impressive variety of Japanese maples, magnolias, and conifers, creating a peaceful and diverse landscape. Don’t miss the fern collection and the countless perennials that provide year-round beauty. The garden is also home to native plant species that attract local wildlife, like birds and butterflies, adding to its charm.

The University of Victoria meticulously maintains the gardens, with a dedicated team ensuring that the paths are clear, the plants are pruned, and the landscape is immaculate throughout the seasons. Their care is evident, especially in the curated walking paths, making it easy to stroll through and enjoy the beauty.

Hours of operation: The gardens are open daily from 8 a.m. to dusk, but visitors can visit anytime. Spring and early summer are the best times to catch the flowers in full bloom.

Parking: Free parking is available in the adjacent Parking Lot 6 (UVic) on weekends and holidays. During the week, paid parking is required, but it’s easily accessible and affordable.

Whether you’re a plant enthusiast or just looking for a peaceful escape, Finnerty Gardens is a beautiful retreat in Victoria that shouldn’t be missed!

This is a beautiful campus. Lots of walking trails and so much green space! I also love that there are picnic tables all around outside so people can do their studying outside in the fresh air.
