In 1990, a small group of Ottawa families started The Ottawa Organic Food Group, (OOFA). Our vision was to support local organic farmers and to eat "SOL" foods -Seasonal-Organic-Local.
Jack Lytle, Esther's Dad, was one of our first farmers, and we visited his farm with our children to help transplant seedlings, weed, and harvest. Jack was a treasure trove of organic food-growing information, and he taught us so much about how nature works and how to work with nature.
He even showed us how to pull off a leaf of Chinese cabbage or coaxing up a carrot, wiped on our sleeve as a working-in-the-field-snack
OOFA grew to 80 families, 9 local farmers, and a tradition of working on the farms so that all ages of us not only knew our farmers by their first names, but also knew which field each veggie we ate grew in.
There were many folks in the area, some healthy and some with major food and chemical allergies who thrived because of Jack's dedication as a farmer. His large varieties of vegges were always beautifully presented and fairly priced.
In the 1990's, when some of us camped out and apprenticed for several days, Jack would reminisce about the 1950's with no electricity along Upper Dwyer Hill Road yet, and his decision to grow crops without herbicides, pesticides, and the new super seeds that bound a farmer to agribusiness expenses which impoverished soil and farm families.
He also remembered Esther as a toddler, helping to pack veggies in the same way that recently, Esther and Zak's first daughter passionately packed separate carrots in each order box!
Maybe with climate change, we will come to appreciate even more the magic of Jack Lytle's Farm being passed down to the third generation with the possibility of his Granddaughters stewarding that land in the future.
It is an honour and a comfort for this 78 year "young" veggie muncher to support Esther and Zak as they take over of the farm from Jack, adding their own vision to Jack's.
