I had Matt come take a look at my yard and get his advice on caring for the fruit trees and bushes I currently have, as well as his advice for optimizing my space when I continue to grow my fruit collection. I couldn't recommend his service enough - he is incredibly knowledgeable and I know that one hour of his time saved me hours, maybe days, of googling, reading, deliberating, etc. over garden planning and tree care. In 2022 I accepted a position managing a small organic orchard of just over 200 fruit trees (apple, pear and cherry). I have very little experience in this field and the orchard had been plagued with insect infestations for the past several years. The prior manager had consulted with another local orchard farmer as well as an organic orchard farmer from Quebec. The farmer in Quebec had the same problem as us and the local farmer simply stated that he had tried organic methods in his orchard and had concluded that they do not work. During 2022 the insect problem persisted and I decided to get a consultant to visit the farm in hopes of getting some advice on how to deal with this situation. I saw Matt’s website, The Urban Orchardist, and gave him a call. Matt was able to visit our farm and inspect the orchard. He gave us many good tips on how to manage the orchard, what to look for, how to prune the trees, etc. In addition, Matt sent me a seasonal spraying routine suitable for organic farming. In 2023 I applied Matt’s program although, not perfectly, as I caught covid just as spring spraying for codling moth was to start. In spite of missing out on that first important spraying, I was still able to keep the codling moth problem under control by using a spray Matt had suggested for second generation codling moth. We had an amazing crop of mostly bug free apples and pears (the cherry trees took the year off). I am very grateful to Matt for the help he has given us. Also, I must mention that Matt’s fee was very, very reasonable. If your orchard needs a little help, I strongly recommend giving Matt a call.
