Great place to visit to learn about the life cycle of salmon as well as hopefully spotting a bear or two. The guy working there was super friendly, really knowledgeable and took the time out to come and speak with us and explain the workings. He was also always on the lookout for a bear for us and just before we left we lucked out and one appeared out of the bush. Don’t forget to leave a tip if visiting! Due to the change in climate it’s been a difficult few years for anybody in the fisheries industry.

Worth the visit and the chance to see bears! We weren’t so lucky in the bear department, but the fish were pretty neat to see and the staff were very informative and kind with any questions we had. It’s a pretty spectacular thing they are doing. Really appreciate the experience and knowledge gained.

Bumpy dirt road to get there but well worth it for a chance to see bears in natural habitat. You have to stay within the fenced area for saftety. Plan for multiple visits for sighting. It's very serene and beautiful to nature watch, even if you don't catch the bears at the right time. Limited parking.

Fantastic spot to see bears very close if you are lucky enough to be around when they wander in from the forest to feed from the Salmon from waterfall pools next to the hatchery. Super friendly staff chat to help achieve this and pass time pleasantly..waiting for a bear or two.

This is a non-profit salmon hatchery, which happens to also be a great location for observing wildlife, including black bears. The volunteers may be able to show you some of the salmon they are holding the tanks for spawning; when we were there, they were tossing live salmon back into the estuary, to the delight of kids watching. There is a very small visitor center with a handful of displays. We visited in late October 2023 and were blessed to see a mother and cub black bear foraging on salmon carcasses. In addition, we saw a sea lion that swam up the estuary before being chased away by the bear! I chatted for a while with the manager, Dave, who was very knowledgeable and friendly. He told us that in 10 years, he had never before seen a sea lion in the estuary, so perhaps don’t get your hopes up on that!

This was our favorite out of five hatcheries we visited on Vancouver Island in late September. We did not see a bear (I think we were a little early in the season). But the scenery here is lovely and the hatchery staff very welcoming and happy to answer questions.

Very lovely place. You will learn a lot about the fishes and their abilities like changing their color for matching the surroundings. The people are doing an important job and you will learn why. We can highly recommend to spent some time here 🙂
